Machu Picchu
OllantayTambo Ruins
(Part II)

The Ollantaytambo rock quarry was across the river valley on the opposite hillside. Workers moved stones using rollers, sloping planes and ramps. At the floor of the valley they diverted the river around the rocks, rather than transport them across the river.

The whole complex is another National Archaeological Park. It is located in the Ollantaytambo district, province of Urubamba. The town is about 47.2 miles away from Cuzco by the road Chinchero and about 42 miles by railway at an altitude of 8856 ft.

Today, its name as "fortress" is common, which is improper because it wasn't only built for protection, but also was a complex city with a great urban sector and religious temples. For the noble population dwelling in the city there was a very ample and well planned urban sector, a plaza, and an enormous building completely roofed. It served as barracks and as lodge for the army of the region.
